Australian Memoirs of Settler Belonging

The project proposes a literary-critical analysis of memoirs published since the 1990s by Australian public intellectuals (writers, artists, historians, academics, journalists) who thematize both personal and national belonging (or unbelonging) to the land as well as to a particular historical narrative shaping that land. This focus has been recurring in Australian cultural production with a surprising intensity as a result of revisionist historiography, shifts in interpreting contested history of Australian colonization, and the still unresolved relationship between white settlers and Indigenous population. The thematic and narratological comparative analysis maps different ways in which the selected authors come to terms with the violent history of their country and guilt for their ancestors’ complicity in Indigenous dispossession, while it also explores hybrid narrative strategies, literary tropes, and functions of memoirs. The project, concluded with a scholarly monograph, uses Australian context to show how intellectual elite can shape the discourse of national identities.
