Historiam videre. Testimony, Experience and the Empirical Evidence in the Early Modern Historiography of the Bohemian Lands

Anotace anglicky

One of the important tasks of the historical research is the study on the changing theory and practices of historical writing. The aim of this project is to analyse Czech, German and Latin historical texts coming from the Bohemian Lands in the 16th and 17th centuries. In contrast to the current interpretations of the early modern historiography, this project brings two methodological and conceptual shifts. The early modern historiography will not be approached as a chapter in the story of the perfection of historical criticism, but rather as part of the broad and complex context of this period’s cultures of knowledge (1). The analysis will therefore be directed towards the significance of the symptomatic components of period epistemology, in particular the empirical evidence, experience, testimony etc. (2) which were an integral part of early modern forms of representation of history, standing on the interface between rhetoric and empirical approach, but to which more systematic research has yet to be devoted. The results will be published in seven articles and one monograph.
