Contemporary Philosophy of Biology: Organism as an Agent

Anotace anglicky

This project focuses on a key concept of contemporary philosophy of biology: the notion of organism as an agent. It draws inspiration from current theories of extended evolutionary synthesis, from philosophical teachings of H. Bergson and A. N. Whitehead, and from the theory of evolution by meaning attribution which goes back to C.S. Peirce and J. von Uexküll. This helps us formulate a fresh perspective on the topic. Our preliminary definition of organismal agency builds both on the basic properties of living beings such as redundancy, modularity, reproduction, variability and work, and – even more importantly – on complex processes such as exploration of the biosphere, anticipation, learning, memory, inwardness, self-representation, self-relation, and evolution by interaction. Against this background, we (re)evaluate the theoretical concepts of biological causation, signalisation, and interpretation in living beings. The project will contribute to current discussions on this topic both on the philosophical and biological end of the spectrum.
