Language and ‘Race’ Identities among Africans and Afro-Czechs in the Czech Republic

Grounded in ethnography, the primary aim of this project is to develop a nuanced understanding of the social identities of Africans and Afro-Czechs in the Czech Republic (CR) with a focus on language and race. While the historical trajectories of people with African heritage in CR have been addressed, there has been no comprehensive study that systematically examines the contemporary lives of this heterogeneous group of people. Given the current prevalence of discussions about race globally, the empirical findings of this study offer an opportunity to make a mark in the topical field of ‘language and race’ with findings from the Czech Republic. The research will advance the ontological and epistemological study of the relationship between language and race through the geopolitical shift to a post-communist country. The study will also yield insights into how racial and linguistic identities are reflected by micro dynamics of ‚othering‘, exclusion, disempowerment, discrimination and complex trajectories of Czech vis-à-vis African vis-à-vis Afro-Czech identities.
