Fallibilism and Its Immanent Structure

The project is concerned with the complex articulation of the philosophical position of fallibilism, which sees fallibility as a constitutive rather than merely arbitrary part of human knowledge and experience. In contrast to similar conceptions (Popper, Descartes), we call it immanent fallibilism because it seeks to articulate the central distinction between truth and error exclusively from within experience itself. The historical part of the interpretation, in which related immanent positions (Hegel, Peirce, Wittgenstein and historical epistemology) are analyzed, is first complemented by epistemo-logical considerations, which seek the basis of fallibilism in the relational structure of words such as “true,” “certain,” “exact”. This structure further turns out to be a social structure. In the next step, we move to expressive considerations dealing with the way in which fallibilist doctrine endorses something to be avoided, namely error. We argue that such expressive difficulties stem from the very immanent nature of our knowledge.
