From the wheel to the thorn: Evolution and adaptations to parasitism in the Syndermata

Understanding the origin and adaptative processes associated with the evolution of parasitism is one of the major challenges in evolutionary biology. However, the evolutionary mechanisms driving the evolution of parasitism are difficult to understand since most parasitic lineages arose deep in evolutionary history. The project aims to study the evolution and adaptations of parasitism using the Syndermata as a model group. Syndermata is a diverse taxon comprising animals of very different lifestyles and morphologies, including the ‘wheel’ animals (“Rotifera”) containing free-living, epizoic and parasitic species, and the thorny-headed worms (Acanthocephala), a group of highly modified parasites. This makes Syndermata an ideal group to study transitions between different lifestyles. Using modern ultrastructural and genomic approaches, we will characterize the transition to parasitism in rotifers with little morphological modifications. Then, we will assess the interrelationships of acanthocephalans using transcriptomics and their adaptions to different host groups using genomics.
