Diversity dynamics across scales

Anotace anglicky

Why species diversity is dramatically unevenly distributed across phylogeny and regions remains among the main enigmas in ecology and evolution. Last decades produced conflicting results, suggesting that species accumulate in regions and clades at constant, slowing, or accelerating rates or that species diversity stabilizes at an equilibrium. Due to the conflicts, it is hard to explain or predict changes in species diversity. My recent work indicated that diversity dynamics across phylogeny change systematically as clades grow, accumulate species and expand geographically. Correspondingly, regional diversity depends on the time for species accumulation, their rates of accumulation, and on environmental constraints, whose relative effects and interactions change with the scale of the analysis. The project aims to test and elaborate the scale-dependence, using tetrapod vertebrates (30,000+ species), so as to relate the results to each other and formulate their synthesis. Project builds on the new concept of phylogenetic scale and cross-scale methods, which my work recently developed.
