MEANING AS AN OBJECT – PRINCIPLES OF SEMANTIC THEORIES

The problem of the nature of linguistic meaning has been in the centre of attention of philosophers for many decades. Despite the exciting advance of semantic theories over the last century, there are still many controversial issues concerning answers to the foundational questions. The main paradigm still seems to be the "semiotic" one (an expression stands for or represents its meaning), though over the recent decades there emerged also an alternative account known as the "use theory of meaning". Moreover, the mathematization of linguistic studies in the second half of the previous century opened up a new road for explicating meanings as objects: without necessarily accepting the semiotic model, it utilized the framework of set theory for the purposes of explicating meanings as set-theoretical objects. The hasty development has brought about a lot of new and interesting philosophical problems, which the project aims to tackle. We will seek answers to open questions concerning foundational assumptions beyond such theories as well as criteria of their success and fruitfulness.
