Death and the Youth: A Study of Dionysian Eschatology

Anotace anglicky

This project centres on the figure of the Greek god Dionysus in his relationship to the world of the dead. It must be emphasised that what is meant by the relationship between Dionysus and the dead is not this divinity’s allegedly chthonic character, connection with fertility, or rites of passage, as has been postulated by numerous scholars. The preliminary study based on ancient sources indicates that Dionysus was widely believed to have descended to the netherworld to deify his mother and to have subsequently returned. This event was ritually re-enacted by various Greek communities during the Anthesteria, Agrionia, Agrania, Thyia, and some other festivals. On this occasion, the symbolic gate to the netherworld was temporarily open, which, due to its location in watery places, could cause a symbolic flood. It would also involve the risk of pollution and facilitate the traffic of souls between the two worlds. This latter aspect might have had a particular impact on the creation of certain forms of ritual that involved performances related to the temporary presence of the dead.
