Anotace anglicky

The subject of the research is a set of almost 100 illustrated editions of a classic work of Czech literature of the 19th century, the collection of ballads by K. J. Erben The Posy (1853) between 1861 and 2024. The research stems from the intersection of literary history and textology, intermedial studies and cultural history. We will explore the relationship of illustrations (visual transmediations) to the literary pretext and genre of the ballad while respecting the illustrations as autonomous representations in the context of the artist's work and period. We will observe to what extent the illustrated editions reflect the contemporary understanding of The Posy as a bearer of cultural tradition, the need to update or stabilize traditional ballad themes in a given historical situation; to what extent the artifact and the edition of the text are influenced by the publisher´s concept of the illustrated book and the target audience. Interpretation based on an intermedia approach will be complemented by analyses into the editing and publishing practices and their social conditionality.
