Examining the effects of psychosocial stress in pregnancy on child temperament from the social-ecological model perspective – a Big Data study

Anotace anglicky

Stress in pregnancy has been associated with variations in child temperament. However, previous research mostly relied on self-reports of perceived stress and rarely examined the context in which stress experiences occur. It is therefore the objective of this project to introduce the social-ecological model into prenatal programming research, taking into account not only stress perceptions, but also objective stress exposures at individual, family, environmental, and systemic levels. By leveraging “Big Data” from existing pregnancy cohorts across several continents combined with objective and publicly available data on socioeconomic and environmental exposures, we aim to disentangle the effects of stress exposures at different levels while investigating relations between different types of stressors and perceived stress and their effects on child temperament. The proposed project will provide novel evidence on the effects of prenatal stress regarding the types of stressors and their respective contributions, with a large potential of informing social policies and clinical practice.
