Anotace anglicky

The project will explore the unique intercultural process which led to the transition and exceptional acclaim of R.U.R. and The Insect Play (by Karel and Josef Čapeks) in the USA and the UK in the 1920s and 1930s. The research (once hindered by political cirmcustances and by the dissemination of archival materials) will be realized by an international and interdisciplinary team and benefit from the new advancements in drama and theatre studies, in textual criticism, theory of translation and cultural theory. This will allow its comprehensive treatment. Key questions: What circumstances led to the phenomenal success of two originally Czech plays in the 1920s and 1930s cultures of the USA and the UK? Which key figures and institutions acted as mediators for their transition? What aspects of the plays were critically highlighted? What role did censorship play? What was the relationship between the English translations and the Czech texts? What dramatic and staging innovations did both plays cause? Did 'Robots' and 'Insects' affect the cultural and political status of Czechoslovakia?
