Chronicles of Hosni: Love, Texts and Selfhood in Late Colonial Egypt

In the early decades of the 20th century, young urban Egyptians began writing in new ways. Often the first to be literate in their families, they became obsessed with writing diaries and photographing their inchoate middle-class lives. They wrote secret letters to each other, composed scrapbooks, snapped pictures of themselves and of each other, and arranged them into elaborate photographic albums. They kept diaries filled with narrative accounts of love, friendships, dreams and aspirations, all of which differed significantly from those of their parents. Using a corpus of previously unexamined private sources and combining insights from the ethnography of reading and writing with close analysis of texts, images, and their assemblages, this project will shed new light on the emergence of new forms of gendered selfhood in colonial Egypt. It will trace a new textual culture that radically reshaped the relationship between words and people; the role that novel self-representational practices played in the making of modern selves; and the forms of relationships and intimacy they enabled.
