Sentence structure prediction and prediction error in Czech language acquisition

The project aims at developing the existing research on the early acquisition of Czech, particularly the mechanisms of predictive sentence processing and their role in the acquisition of grammatical categories. The first line of research will examine predictions of nouns in sentences from the semantics of verbs, and test their interaction with word order and case marking of nouns. In the second branch of the project, we will address the potential role of noun endings in the acquisition if grammatical gender. In the third branch, these results will be extended and we will address the role of prediction error in the acquisition of gender. The three experimental lines of work will be complemented with corpus analyses that will support the creation of experimental stimuli, and will examine the time course and robustness of the acquisition process for gender agreement between adjectives, participles and nouns. Overall, the project will contribute to our understanding of cognitive mechanisms participating in early language acquisition.
