Czech Literary Culture in Times of Transformation: Crime Fiction Between Late Socialism and Global Capitalism

The project explores Czech literary culture in times of socioeconomic transformation through detective fiction of the era spanning from the late normalization period of the 1980s to the consolidation of the new literary field in the 2000s. It claims that, compared to the so-called highbrow literature, popular literature did not undergo such significant changes, challenging the established periodization of Czech literary historiography. The project is inspired by the “long change” concept focusing on gradual, long-term transformations, and applies it to detective fiction. It tracks these changes on three levels: A. themes: the changes of the represented crime and its investigation in relation to the changing societal imaginations, B. poetics: focalization of the narrative, narrator's position and functions, and others, C. literary criticism and reception: the place of the detective genre in the literary field of the period.
