Forests play an important role in the global carbon balance and energy exchange between Earth’s surface and the atmosphere. It is generally agreed that the forests acts as carbon sinks and the afforestation is considered as a vital tool to combat climate change. However some studies suggest that for coniferous forests the cooling effect of carbon fixation may be smaller than the warming effect due to their low albedo and that particularly the species conversion from broadleaved to lower albedo coniferous dominated stands causes net warming. In our project we target an important and timely scientific question – what is the relationship between forest structure, its albedo and productivity? We will take the benefit of extensive in-situ database of hundreds forest plots and empirical satellite observations to predict forest albedos in high spatial and temporal resolution and quantify the link between forest structures (e.g. species composition, volume of growing stock), its albedos and productivity during all phenological stages of forests.
