Transformations of the Prison System in the Czech Lands in the Period 1965–1992. Systemic and Individual Adaptations

Anotace anglicky

The central research topic of the project is the Czechoslovak prison system in the period 1965–1992. It will be studied from the perspective of adaptation mechanisms, both systemic and individual. The selected interdisciplinary approach (a combination of history, psychology, sociology and oral history) will be used to cast light on power relations between the controlling and the controlled within the prison system. In particular their mutual interactions, strategies of individual actors and their psychological reactions to threats will be studied. Further, an analysis of other influences, factors and triggers affecting the final form of the repressive institution will be carried out. Research into this topic will simultaneously focus on the general definition of the role of the prison system and repression in society of that time. In this the project will also cover both continuities and discontinuities before 1968 and after 1989. The intended project outputs are: 1) monograph, 2) several studies in impacted and peer-reviewed journals, 3) a collection of oral history interviews.
