Unorthodox Orthodoxes: A Forgotten Quest for "Real" Marxist Science in Eastern Europe

Anotace anglicky

The project is devoted to the investigation of the concept of science inspired by the analysis of Marx’s method, which can be found in the works of some East European Marxists. The critique of these Marxists addressed to humanist and science-oriented thought will be shown as entwined with their understanding of science and oriented towards the role of historical praxis in the process of the development of knowledge. By focusing on thinkers such as Evald Ilyenkov, Jindřich Zelený, and Jarosław Ładosz, who defy simple labels of orthodoxy/heterodoxy, and locating their ideas in the context of the main tensions in the philosophical field, this project aims to open a new angle in researching the intellectual history of the state socialist era. Ultimately, this project will reveal the competing notions of science among different groups of Marxist intellectuals and will continue in the delineation of their relation to the social changes of the 1960s–70s.
