Mystical Knowledge and Cognition in Baroque Epistemology

Anotace anglicky

The vigorous current of second-scholasticim revoked during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries many medieval debates and added new twists to old theories. One of them concerned epistemology and the theory of species. This project is to evaluate the position of species spiritualis, novel notion which I have recently discovered in the works of Baroque Carmelites, within these discussions. Is it really an original notion typical for Carmelites or does it develop older theories? My preliminary hypothesis is that this is an original notion introduced in order to rationally describe mystical knowledge and explicate obscure passages of Teresa of Ávila’s works. Since the notion of species is suddenly used to describe cognition of immaterial instead of material objects, it in effect revolutionises the whole theory. The inquiry is based on close reading and analysis of primary texts following the basic rules of modern hermeneutics. This research project significantly contributes to our knowledge of baroque (non)scholastic epistemological debates and the theory mystical knowledge.
