Though two anniversaries connected with Metternich are to be commemorated in 2009 ? 200 years since his appointment to the Austrian foreign ministry and the 150th anniversary of his death ? the personality and activities of the well-known Austrian chancellor has been researched less than might be expected. Such is the case regarding Metternich?s diplomacy in the Near East. In this project I will focus on Metternich?s policy towards the Ottoman Empire as well as the Austrian-Ottoman (Turkish) relations in the period which has also been mostly unresearched up to the present time. Attention will be paid to political, economic, religious, cultural and military history. Metternich engaged in all these spheres, from the support of Austrian merchants to his cooperation with Ottoman reformers and the protection of the Jews and Christians. As to the fact that the topic remains unresearched up to the present time, an extensive research of unpublished documents housed in European archives must be carried out. The outputs will be published Czech, German and English, papers and one book.
