Prevalence of symptomatic gastroesophageal reflux disease in children in the Czech Republic

Anotace anglicky

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is properly characterized by reflux episodes causing well defined clinical difficulties and/or complications. However, the disease is often inaccurately diagnosed in adults and children, which together with the less-than-ideal design of the papers published to date, leads to limitations not only in epidemiological research on GERD. This study aims to determine the prevalence of symptomatic GERD in children in the Czech Republic, considering clear clinical criteria stated in the current recommendations for the diagnosis and treatment of GERD. The project's significance lies in providing essential data for public health planning and policy-making, enabling targeted healthcare interventions. The primary objective is to determine the prevalence of symptomatic GERD using proton pump inhibitor (PPI) tests, endoscopic examination, and pHmetry and impedance examination in paediatric population. All procedures are designed to be fully in line with current recommendations for the care of patients with GERD. Secondary objectives include evaluating the prevalence of GERD-related symptoms and comparing the quality of life among different groups (children diagnosed with GERD, reflux hypersensitivity and functional pyrosis). The study will employ a cross-sectional design, targeting a representative sample size of 1,000 respondents from primary grammar schools. The expected results will contribute to preventive measures, interventions, and increased awareness among healthcare professionals and caregivers regarding early and correct detection and management of GERD in children. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to actually determine the prevalence of childhood symptomatic GERD.
