This is an abstract related to the presentation prepared for the XLVIII Seminar of Applied Mathematics held in Boguszów-Gorce, Poland in September 2018. The abstract itself was published in the book of abstracts. An overview of trend tests used primarily in hydrology was presented. Especially, the modifications of the nonparametric Mann-Kendall test were discussed along with the rationale for their existence. Sort-term persistence and long-term persistence were highlighted as the main reasons for designing new tests, but also some hybrid tests combining the classical techniques with resampling were mentioned. A follow-up paper (or book chapter) is planned.
