Use of Grafana software for monitoring the Czech Weather Radar Network
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
poster on 5th Workshop on Radar Calibration and Monitoring Offenbach, Germany, 8.-10.10.2025 The Czech Weather Radar Network (CZRAD), which is operated by the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (CHMI), consists of two C-band Doppler dual-polarization weather radars Vaisala WRM 200. Vaisala software IRIS includes tools for radar hardware and software monitoring. While these tools are essential for on-site maintenance, they have certain limitations for remote monitoring (limited archive length, less flexible visualization, missing SMS/email alerting, worse accessibility over network, especially outside CHMI). Over the last three years, the open source monitoring and visualization tools Prometheus/Grafana have been implemented in the CHMI radar department as a replacement of previously used ICINGA2 monitoring software. Although radars hardware parameters were already imported into ICINGA2, their utilization has significantly accelerated with the transition to Grafana. Currently, dashboards for monitoring processing and visualization servers, network connectivity, radar hardware (BITE information), environmental sensors (temperature, humidity), and UPS are implemented and operationally used in Grafana. Dashboards for monitoring the results of various calibration and verification tools, as well as for monitoring radar data availability and data processing timing, are currently under development. Email/SMS alerting have already been implemented for selected server and radar parameters (disk usage, load, …) and are currently being expanded to include other parameters. This contribution describes in detail implementation of Prometheus/Grafana system in the CHMI radar department, specifically focusing on the integration of BITE information from Vaisala radars with Prometheus/Grafana. Examples of individual Grafana dashboards are also provided.
