Sustainable production and nutrient management in pine and birch stands in lowlands
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Scots pine is a commercially important conifer tree on nutrient-poor sandy soils in Czech lowlands. There is a risk of nutrients depletion when removing parts of woody biomass from forest stands. Silver birch accompanies the pine frequently on moist soils. The most common forest system is the clear-cutting as whole boles and important part of crown biomass are removed frequently from the site. To renew the pine, natural regeneration from adjacent stands is expected. The project aims to optimize nutrient cycling in both pine and birch stands. The proposals were based on biomass stock (both above- and below-ground parts) and contents of main nutrients and nutrient pools in forest floor and soil from sustainable forest management point of view. The information on particular nutrient pools of forest biomass components allowed us to propose amounts of biomass to be left on site after logging.
