This study evaluates the impact of forest cover loss caused by bark beetle outbreaks on the hydrological regime and water retention capacity of small mountainous catchments in the Jeseníky Mountains during the extreme precipitation event of September 2024. Based on continuous soil moisture monitoring at depths of 10–50 cm, the research compares soil saturation dynamics between spruce stands and adjacent clear-cuts created by salvage logging. The results indicate that the increase in soil water saturation following the extreme rainfall was more pronounced within forest stands than in open areas. Furthermore, the findings suggest that the current extent of clear-cuts (approximately 7% of the study area) did not significantly diminish the overall water retention capacity of the catchments during this extreme hydrometeorological event.
