Sub-fossil bark beetle remains as indicator of past outbreaks
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Bark beetle outbreaks have increased in frequency and magnitude over the past decades and have become more associated with periods of drought than windstorms, as was the case historically. Extensive monitoring projects, studies about the phenology of bark beetle species, and modelling studies have improved our understanding of the current status quo and the ability to predict future outbreaks . Recommended methods for future mitigation of outbreaks are often related to adaptive management to improve the forests’ resilience to droughts and other extreme events . The eff ect of this management change, however, is uncertain over a longer period . Paleoecology, the subfi eld of ecology that uses fossil records to reconstruct past environments, can be used to reconstruct former baseline stages of forest structure and composition, including the forest fauna.
