Trasnboundary management of groundwater resources in the Czech-Saxon area; an example of the RESIBIL project

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

The Czech Cretaceous sedimentary basin is one of the most significant sources of groundwater in Central Europe. Its significance increases especially during the period of climate change, which is manifested by long droughts affecting shallow aquifers. Cretaceous aquifer is therefore a strategic source of drinking water not only for the Czech Republic but also for neighboring Germany. The RESIBIL cross-border project aims to develop a common strategy for the optimal use of groundwater resources. The project is being developed in cooperation with the Water Research Institute, the Czech Geological Survey and the Saxon State Office for the Environment, Agriculture and Geology. During 2017, the geological concept was unified on both sides of the border. Based on a common 3D structural geological model, a conceptual hydrogeological model was created. The area of interest was divided into three separate model structures, on which cross-border models are created in a transient mode. They use more than 50 years long data set of groundwater, surface flow rate, and data of the use of water resources. The model will simulate various landuse scenarios and includes a wide range of demographic and socio-economic development scenarios in both countries. Cross-border impact will be studied. This decision-making tool will be available to water authorities both in the Czech Republic and in Germany. RESIBIL project is financially supported by the Program of cooperation to promote cross-border cooperation 2014-2020 between the Czech Republic and the Free State of Saxony and The European Regional Development Fund.
