Bedřich Smetana is one of the most significant music symbols connected with our national identity. We can distinguish between clear periods defined mostly by important historical events which determined the relation of the Czech music and general publicto him and changed it positively and negatively. This study presents a brief overview of this development and characteristics of its main periods inclusive the most important activities: 1884?1918, 1919?1938, the time of the Second World War, since the turn of the 1940s and 1950s and after 1989 to now.
