Czech Bandmasters in Dalmatia and Littoral Croatia during the Austrian Period (1867-1918) and the Tradition of Civic Brass Bands
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The annexation of Dalmatia and Littoral to Austria (1815, conclusively 1867) brought a change in cultural influences. Seaside regions with centuries-old links to Venice have been involved in the migration process of musicians and the music repertoire in multinational Austria. A significant layer of cultural heritage dating back to this period is the tradition of civil brass bands. These bands were founded under the influence of Austrian military and naval bands, but a large share in their founding was played by Bohemian (Czech and German) bandleaders and music teachers, who expanded new types of musical instruments and repertoire. Based on Czech sources, the paper will try to clarify the question, of when the import of Austrian music culture began to become a deliberate establishment of contacts between Slavic nations with a common interest in the federalization of the monarchy. Attention will be paid to the parallels between the development of civic bands in Bohemia and Dalmatia in 1860-1918. The interest is also focused on the circumstances of establishing national bands and Sokol bands,, and their later transformations.
