Ludmila in Bohemian Graduals and Hymnals
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The cult of Saint Ludmila can be traced in the Czech song culture since the 16th century, when the first translations of liturgical texts from Latin took place. In addition to the usual chants of the Gradual, the strophic verses to the Alleluia and the sequence, which after translation are close to the form of a strophic song, were also translated into Czech. The first songs dedicated to St. Ludmila dates back to the end of the 16th century, when the first printed Catholic hymnals were created. A song by Šimon Lomnický z Budče, which retells the legend of Saint Ludmila, was well-known and later long-lived. On the other hand, polyphonic songs by Adam Michna and Václav Holan were not included in the repertoire of monophonic spiritual singing. Larger production of songs for St. Ludmila is only visible in the 19th century, when the cult of the land patrons is revived.
