Dripping oil and lifting paint on Black and White on Brown by Georges Mathieu: Material research and conservation treatment (conference contribution)
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
In 2003, painting by Georges Mathieu Black and White on Brown (1955) was acquired by National Gallery in Prague (Inv. no. O 18014). Soon after acquisition, first signs of the degradation were observed – the thick black impastos were soft and sticky, locally liquefied. It was assumed that the condition of the paint is caused by a poor drying skill of the oil binder in the combination with carbon-based pigment that slows down the drying process. Detailed analysis of the binders from the drips and the paint was performed using GC-MS. Pigments were identified by means of non-invasive XRF and Raman spectroscopy and via micro-Raman spectroscopy and SEM-EDS on samples. The conservation treatment comprises of consolidation and removal of oil drips. The next step will be to prevent the development of new drips.
