Buckwheat in the Czech Republic and in Europe

Buckwheat is traditional crop in some European regions and in Czech Republic. In Czech areas, it was the most favourite food in 16th and 17th century, then the growing decrease due to expansion of bakery products and potato popularity. The maximum falling-off of interest in buckwheat was coming up during the last century. In the former Czechoslovakia, what was nearly two times larger country than now Czechia is, the buckwheat was grown on the 2911 hectares with the average yield 790 kg per hectare in the year 1920. Buckwheat is a low input plant making it very suitable for organic farming; however, one of the most serious problems in ecological and conventional buckwheat growing is a lack of quality and suitable buckwheat cultivars in the Czech Republic. There were grown mainly local landraces in the past. Thanks to general unconcern, there was also stopped the breeding of buckwheat in former Czechoslovakia.
