Nitrogen may be taken up in the form of a cation as NH4+ or an anion as NO3-. The aim of this work was to compare kinetics parameters of ammonium and nitrate uptake and N allocation in two wheat species Triticum aestivum L.and Triticum durum Desf.. Uptake rate of both depends mainly on the availability of these ions in the nutrient medium. Therefore plants have developed very sensitive and selective uptake systems. In both collections of cultivars, the rate of ammonium uptake was significantly higher incomparison to nitrate uptake. Within each group there were found the intra-species differences. Measuring values of both parameters correspond to the activity of high affinity transport system to both ions.
