Genetically modified potato plants in nutrition and prevention of diseases in humans and animals: a review

GMO have become a real constituent of our lives and they are commonly introduced into the food chain of people and animals. In the field of genetic modifications plants are used in the majority of cases, whereas potatoes represent one of the suitable model plants. A large number of various genetically modified potato plants exist at present. GM potatoes resistant to bacterial, viral and insect pests or resistant to herbicides represent an important category. Modifications leading to an increased food nutrition value are applied in human diet. Much attention is paid to "edible vaccines", plants producing viral or bacterial antigens, which could be used for the vaccination of people and animals. The development of GMO producing biopolymers or a spider web could be suitable for industry. Most of the above mentioned modifications appear in the stage of laboratory and green-house experiments; however some of them have been practically used and others will probably be used in the future.
