Comparison of phagocytic activity in different European fish species
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Physiological blood values of freshwater fish species vary to a great extent and often have not yet been thoroughly evaluated. In addition to interspecies variability, fish hematology and immunity are greatly influenced by the surrounding environment. The aim of this study was therefore to compare the phagocytic activity and blood cell indices of different European fish species. Twenty-four fish species from continental Europe were selected e common carp (Cyprinus carpio), brown trout (Salmo trutta m. fario), rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis), European eel (Anguilla anguilla), northern pike (Esox lucius), zander (Sander lucioperca), European perch (Perca fluviatilis), wels catfish (Silurus glanis), tench (Tinca tinca), Russian sturgeon (Acipenser gueldenstaedti), black bullhead (Ameiurus melas), brown bullhead (Ameiurus nebulosus), round goby (Neogobius melanostomus), common gudgeon (Gobio gobio), stone loach (Barbatula barbatula), pumpkinseed (Lepomis gibbosus), common bream (Abramis brama), European chub (Squalius cephalus), common roach (Rutilus rutilus), common rudd (Scardinius erythrophthalmus), Prussian carp (Carassius gibelio), Maraena whitefish (Coregonus maraena) and common barbel (Barbus barbus). These species are most often investigated during fish health monitoring. Due to its economic importance, African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) was included. The blood was collected from the caudal vein into heparinized syringes. Red and white blood cell counts, and differential leukocyte counts were determined. The blood was also stimulated with zymosan, and the phagocytic activity was measured by luminolenhanced chemiluminescence. The obtained values varied greatly between different fish species. Due to the immense variability of fish, blood indices including the phagocytic activity can differ significantly between individual species. Their knowledge is therefore essential for the assessment of the fish health status. The obtained data expands the understanding of the varied physiological phagocytic activity and haematological indices of twenty-five individual freshwater fish species. This knowledge has the potential to facilitate future assessments of the fish health status and disease diagnostics.
