The paper is aimed at assessment of the Czech food and processing industry after the EU accession in 2004 under the conditions of the EU single market and the EU Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). The structural and economic development of the industry under the EU conditions have been influenced by more factors (Trail et al. 1998), including: initial situation caused especially by how the restitution and privatisation were carried out after 1989; situation on the markets of agricultural commodities andfood under the EU single market; supports under the CAP, including domestic supports; effectiveness of the food industry enterprises and their competitiveness against the EU countries and ?third countries?.
