Kniha mapuje počátky scenáristiky českého hraného filmu a hledá odpovědi na základní otázky týkající se filmových scénářů i scenáristů. V rámci pěti kapitol je psaní pro film přiblíženo jako jedinečný fenomén s vlastními pravidly, osvědčenými praktikami a tvůrci, ne-formálními hierarchiemi i četnými kulturními a mezioborovými přesahy, bez jehož poznávání nebude ani obraz dějin kinematografie nikdy úplný.

The book Writing for Film is focused on the unexplored field of Czech feature film screenwriting from the 1920s to the 1950s. At the beginning, there were two very basic, but vitally important, questions: What exactly is the screenplay, and who is the screenwriter? The answers are sought through the different perspectives of each of five main chapters: 1. “Theme–screenplay” examines the historical development of the statuses, forms and functions of film screenplays. 2. “Theory–practice” deals with the qualitative criteria of so-called good screenplays and the ways screenwriters learned their craft. 3. “Profession–career” traces how writing for film became an autonomous profession and concentrates on the persona of the successful, though now forgotten, screenwriter Josef Neuberg. 4. “Author–system” analyses division of labour as a survival strategy of screenwriters in the environment of the film industry and the impact of their cooperation with other professions and institutions on the works produced. 5. “Traditions–principles” focuses on specific means of expression and creative practices in Josef Neuberg’s screenplays, together with their relationship to cinematographic and broader cultural traditions. This book’s detailed analyses are based on a significant amount of primary archival sources. The general aim is to offer basic orientation in all the mentioned crucial and complex problems associated with the history of Czech screenwriting, to point out the wider interdisciplinary, cultural and practical importance of the study of screenwriting and to inspire further research.
