Catalase was the most prominent enzyme in all the cell lines studied with a significantly higher activity in melanoma cells, including even the nonpigmented ones, than in non-melanoma tumour cells. There was a significant correlation between catalase activity and total antioxidant status of the cells. Melanoma cells were shown to be able to cope with free radical burden of melanogenesis.
