Hussite Memory in Post-Hussite Tábor
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
This chapter deals with the development of the religious mindset of the Tábor urban community from the late middle ages to early modern era. The urban community of Tábor is a vivid example of the development from radical nonconformity to a fully conforming community that adopted the legal, social, and religious norms of the time. The revolutionary ethos and practical organization gradually disappeared, and in the second half of the fifteenth century life in Tábor resembled that in other Bohemian towns, both in lifestyle and in the acquisition and use of economic resources. However, the town of Tábor continued to employ the memory of its radical beginnings and Hussite traditions. Over the course of the fifteenth century, however, the image of Tábor’s radical beginnings faded, and in collective memory the differences between the individual radical factions became blurred. This is how, later, Jan Žižka became one of the representative figures of the entire movement, although historically he suppressed Tábor’s radicals with arms. In the first half of the fifteenth century, the visual representation of the radical past in public spaces became part of the formation and consolidation of the identity of the newly established town. It is likely that the guilds were the main supporters and bearers of these efforts. In the second half of the fifteenth century, this tendency gradually receded, while the symbols of Utraquist identity were preserved. The coexistence of the various Utraquist groups and the gradual assimilation into conservative Utraquism is identifiable as a main trend. After the defeat of the anti-Habsburg uprising in 1547, when the guilds were stripped of their status and privileges within the town, the newly established memory of the radical Hussite past disappeared completely. With the defeat of the Bohemian Estates at White Mountain and the onset of Recatholicization, the confessional situation in Tábor changed. Reminders of the Hussite past, even in such prominent places of radical Hussite memory as Klokoty, were pragmatically replaced with a newly promoted Marian devotion. Reminders of Tábor’s past reappeared in the context of Recatholicization propaganda but were reinterpreted as manifest errors which were rightly eradicated. But even in this respect, the Hussite past was overshadowed by Lutheran doctrine, which the Catholic church rightly saw as a more serious competitor
