Studying of the sources on Fibich in Janáček?s estate proved Janáček took great interest in the work of his contemporary . Janáček owned a copy of the undated score of The Bride of Messina and two librettos from 1884 may come from the period before 1886.Besides, Janáček must also have known the opera Hedy, which he reviewed in 1897, and the opera Šárka, whose analysis he published two years later in 1899 in the magazine Hlídka. He might have used his own copy of Hedy?s short score, where he criticallycommented on the opera?s dramaturgy. The year 1898 witnessed Janáček?s interest in the symphonic poem Othello, whose score and orchestral parts as well as stage-rights he buys from F. A. Urbánek. Fibich?s work interested Janáček but did not instigate him. In his articles Janáček considers Fibich an ingenious composer, praises his plentiful topics and his keys. On the other hand, later on he shows him as a composer of dull tones with a lack of rhythmic wit.
