Experimental and clinical studies have shown an anticancer effect of anticoagulant drugs. The aim of this study is to review the mechanisms by which the common types of anticoagulants influence the primary tumor and metastatic processes of solid tumors.The review evaluates the interference of unfractionated heparin (UFH), low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) and warfarin on the growth of primary tumors and on the development of metastases. The first part of the review evaluates the effect on the growthand development of primary tumors. Attention is paid to the interference with proliferation of cancer cells, tumor angiogenesis and to the interference with the immune system. The second part of the review describes the metastatic process and the effectof anticoagulants on the cell motility and cancer cell adhesion.
