El congreso internacional La Utopía y el Nuevo Mundo se convocó para reunir a especialistas de diversas disciplinas académicas en torno al estudio de la problemática de las utopías modernas en América y Europa. El concepto de utopía tuvo desde su origen una relación especial con la exploración geográfica del mundo y con el escenario americano. Esa estrecha relación permite proponer como hilo conductor del congreso el vínculo entre la utopía (o la distopía) y la idea de "Nuevo Mundo" aplicada por los europeos a América, pero también a todo lo que la modernidad prometía traer. La exploración de ese vínculo permitió lanzar nuevas miradas sobre las identidades cruzadas de Europa y América y sobre lo que supone la utopía como exploración de mundos posibles, crítica del presente y esperanza de un futuro mejor; lo cual significa tanto como lanzar -desde la utopía- una nueva mirada a la modernidad. En el congreso se prestó atención a los conceptos relacionados con la utopía y la distopía, la colonización de ultramar, la formación de Europa y las miradas cruzadas entre Europa y América; todo ello en un espacio cronológico amplio, desde el siglo XV hasta la actualidad. En ese marco de análisis, invitamos a explorar problemáticas múltiples, que van desde las transformaciones del pensamiento, economía y sociedad en la Edad Moderna y Contemporánea, hasta la formación de identidades, las migraciones, la definición de "Europa" y de "América", su nacimiento y constitución.

The international congress The Utopia and the New World was convened to bring together specialists from various academic disciplines around the study of the problem of modern utopias in America and Europe. The concept of utopia had from its origin a special relationship with the geographical exploration of the world, especially with the Americas. This close relationship allowed to propose the link between utopia (or dystopia) and the idea of "New World" applied by Europeans to America, but also to everything that modernity promised to bring. The exploration of this relation allowed also to launch new perspectives on the cross identities of Europe and America and on what utopia entails as an exploration of possible worlds, criticism of the present and hope for a better future; which means as much as launching - from utopia - a new look at modernity. At the congress, attention was paid to the concepts related to utopia and dystopia, overseas colonization, the formation of Europe and the cross-gazes between Europe and America; all in a wide chronological gape, from the fifteenth century to the present. In this framework of analysis, we invite you to explore multiple problems, ranging from the transformations of thought, economy and society in the Modern and Contemporary Age, to the formation of identities, migrations, the definition of "Europe" and "America" , its birth and constitution.
