L'Hégélien, une courte nouvelle rédigée en 1849 par Valérie de Gasparin, représente probablement le tout premier texte fictionnel français réagissant a la philosophie de G. W. F. Hegel. La partie principale du texte consiste dans un incroyable dialogue qui oppose une belle aristocrate suisse ayant franchi la quarantaine a un très jeune et galant fanatique allemand qui a la tête pleine d'idéaux socialistes. Ce chef d'œuvre d'ironie et de tolérance constitue une sorte de réponse personnelle, bien féminine, aux révolutions sociales qui secouent l'Europe des années 1840. L'analyse de la nouvelle nous permettra de restituer le contexte intellectuel de l'époque, de démontrer les paradoxes de la réception hégélienne dans des pays francophones et d'aborder différentes questions relevant du dialogue entre le passé et l'avenir : l'Europe est-elle désormais a l'abri de jeunes fanatiques qui, voulant notre bien a tout prix, risquent de nous assassiner tous ? Bien au-dela du péril communiste, Madame de Gasparin semble avoir illustré dans sa nouvelle un type humain qui ne risque pas de disparaître dans la (post)modernité européenne.

The Hegelian, a short story written in 1849 by Valérie de Gasparin, probably represents the very first French fictional text reacting to the philosophy of G. W. F. Hegel. The main part of the text consists of an incredible dialogue which pits a beautiful Swiss aristocrat in her forties against a very young and gallant German fanatic who has a head full of socialist ideals. This masterpiece of irony and tolerance is a kind of personal response, very feminine, to the social revolutions that shook Europe in the 1840s. The analysis of the story will allow us to restore the intellectual context of the time, to demonstrate the paradoxes of the Hegelian reception in French-speaking countries and to address various questions relating to the dialogue between the past and the future: is Europe now safe from young fanatics who, wanting our good to at all costs, risk assassinating us all? Far beyond the communist peril, Madame de Gasparin seems to have illustrated in her short story a human type that is not in danger of disappearing in European (post)modernity.
