What Kind of Culture Took place in Houses of Culture? The Ideology of Cultural Infrastructure in Historical Perspective

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

In modern history, houses of culture and their predecessors stand at the intersection of many social and political trends that have jointly determined not only what went on inside, but also how the buildings looked and how they came into being. As a result of these broader trends, the social role of buildings that were used for the performance of culture also changed, especially in relation to other modern institutions. In this text, I attempt to distinguish four phases that reflect the ideological and social complexes that gave form, shape, structure and life to the houses of culture. These phases are partly intertwined and we find important contiguities between them that, perhaps surprisingly, transcend the traditional milestones of 20th-century history characterised by changes of "political regimes". Genuine regimes of knowledge have their own dynamics, which, though not independent of political systems, can nevertheless "migrate" between different political discourses and social orders.
