The Ambopākhyāna (5.170-193) is one of the few autobiographical narratives of the Mahābhārata. As such, the basis for any interpretation should always be the fact that it is narrated by Bhīṣma who is a greatly developed character invested in the narrated events, as well as a skilled narrator. His narration of the story of Ambā and Śikhaṇḍin can therefore be seen as subjective and potentially unreliable, and influenced (actively or passively) by the vast &quot;library&quot; of the narratives he knows and often shares with his listeners (most prominently in the Śāntiparvan and the Anuśāsanaparvan). The subjectivity of his narration will be observed on differences between this version of certain events and the versions of other narrators or himself at a later point, and the intertextuality on the palimpsest-like relation with the stories of pativratā women: Sītā, Sāvitrī, Damayantī and Śakuntalā, to show Bhīṣma authoritatively claiming Ambā&apos;s narrative.
