Dieser Artikel stellt ein Forschungsprojekt vor, das die sprachliche und kulturelle Dynamik in Nordostbayern und Westböhmen während des frühen Mittelalters untersucht. Das Projekt verfolgt einen interdisziplinären Ansatz, der linguistische, historische und archäologische Methoden integriert, um die Beziehungen zwischen slawischen Einwohnern und benachbarten Gruppen zu untersuchen. Im Mittelpunkt der Analyse steht die Digitalisierung und räumliche Verankerung von qualitativen Daten, einschließlich toponymischer Aufzeichnungen und archäologischer Funde. Durch den Einsatz fortschrittlicher räumlicher Analysewerkzeuge soll die Studie neue Einblicke in die komplexen Prozesse der kulturellen Verbreitung, der Identitätsbildung und der sozio-politischen Strukturen dieser dynamischen Region ermöglichen.Mehrere Fallstudien veranschaulichen die Prozesse der Eindeutschung slawischer Ortsnamen und kritisieren gleichzeitig Fehlinterpretationen, die germanische Etymologien favorisieren. Besonders exemplarisch ist der Fall von Marktgraitz (aus Gemeinslawischem *Grodc), dessen Erörterung durch eine umfangreiche Belegreihe untermauert, die mehrere Klärungen der historischen Überlieferung liefern und einer neu entwickelten Form der Darstellung solcher Daten folgt.

This article presents a research project exploring the linguistic and cultural dynamics of Northeast Bavaria and Western Bohemia during the Early Middle Ages. The project adopts an interdisciplinary approach, integrating linguistic, historical, and archaeological methodologies to explore the relationships between Slavic inhabitants and neighbouring groups. Central to the analysis is the digitisation and geospatial anchoring of qualitative data, including toponymic records and archaeological findings. By leveraging advanced spatial analysis tools, the study aims to provide new insights into the complex processes of cultural diffusion, identity formation, and the socio-political structures of this dynamic region.Several case studies illustrate the processes involved in the Germanization of Slavic place names while critiquing misinterpretations favouring Germanic etymologies. Particularly exemplary is the case of Marktgraitz (from Common Slavic *Grodc), the discussion of which is underpinned by a comprehensive series of attestations providing several clarifications of the historical record and following a newly developed mode of presentation of such data.
