Der Beitrag untersucht Ricoeurs Auffassung der Entscheidung in den verschiedenen Phasen seines Denkens. Die Fähigkeit, sich zu entscheiden und zu handeln, galt Ricœur sowohl in seinem frühen, phänomenologischen Werk "Das Willentliche und das Unwillentliche" (1950) als auch in seiner hermeneutischen Monographie "Das Selbst als ein Anderer" (1990) als wichtiger Ausdruck menschlicher Aktivität. Obwohl diese zwei Phasen in Ricœurs Denken etliche methodische und sachliche Unterschiede aufweisen, können wir auch auf konstante Motive verweisen. So ist z. B. die entschiedene Ablehnung des Existenzialismus von Jean-Paul Sartre ein wiederkehrendes Thema. Freiheit steht für Ricœur nie mit Negation oder mit Angst in Verbindung. Die Entscheidung steht im Zeichen des freudigen Schwungs (élan), mit dem wir uns in die Zukunft hinein entwerfen. Der Aufsatz formuliert einige Einwände, von denen der wichtigste lautet, dass Ricoeurs späte Analyse der Entscheidung seiner Theorie der persönlichen Identität (Beständigkeit) untergeordnet ist.

This article examines Ricœur's conception of decision in the various phases of his thought. The ability to decide and to act was regarded by Ricœur as an important expression of human activity both in his early phenomenological work "Freedom and Nature" (1950) and in his hermeneutic monograph "Oneself as Another" (1990). Although these two phases in Ricœur's thought show a number of methodological and factual differences, we can also point to constant motifs. For example, the decisive rejection of Jean-Paul Sartre's existentialism is a recurring theme. For Ricœur, freedom is never associated with negation or anxiety. The decision is characterized by the joyful momentum (élan) with which we project ourselves into the future. The essay formulates several objections, the most important of which is that Ricœur's late analysis of decision is subordinate to his theory of personal identity (constancy).
