“We all wanted to be pilots. The majority of us became losers.” The theme of aviation in the novel by Serhiy Zhadan Voroshilovgrad
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
"We all wanted to be pilots, but most of us became losers." The theme of aviation in the novel of Serhij Žadan VorošylovhradThe protagonist of "Voroshylovhrad", a 2010 novel by one of Ukraine's most prominent contemporary writers, Serhiy Zhadan, says: "We all wanted to be pilots, but most of us became losers."The theme of aviation bursts into the narrative quite unexpectedly at the very beginning of the novel, and is not dealt with as extensively and directly by the author, but appears from time to time in the form of brief memories of the protagonist, his friends, or at a more symbolic level. The names of the protagonist and his brother are the starting point for the theme of aviation: Herman Koroljov, whose brother Yuri is missing. They recal such names as Segij Koroljov and Yuri Gagarin.I think it is possible to connect the theme of aviation in the novel with the desire for freedom and liberty. In my article I would like to trace and analyse these connections. I would like to see if it is possible to interpret aviation as a metaphor for democracy in the novel. I would also like to talk about the connection of this specific theme with the poetry of Mychajl Semenko, for example with the poem "Aviator" and some others. The fact that Zhadan wrote his doctoral thesis on Semenko's work and is particularly familiar with this author may contribute to the analysis.
