Die Einleitung stellt das Thema des Sammelbandes vor und zeigt Franz Kafka selbst - mit seinem Werk, in seinem Leben - als einen Fürsprecher des Ländlichen und der Provinz(en). Angesichts asymme-trischer Verhältnisse zwischen Stadt und Land in der Moderne halten die Texte Fürsprache für die zumeist ausgeblendeten Ambivalenzen und Komplexitäten eben jener Räume, indem sie sowohl deren heterogene Erscheinungen als auch ihre jeweiligen perspektivischen Abhängigkeiten und Funktionalisierungen zum Ausdruck bringen. Die literarisch-lebensweltlichen Provinzen Kafkas bilden vielfach verschränkte Räume, in denen sich die Durchdringungen von Urbanem und Ruralem bemerkbar machen. Ganz im Gegensatz zurallgemeinen Tendenz zur Separierung und Spezialisierung treffen hier Vormoderne und Moderne, Büro und Kneipe, Bauern und Beamte aufeinander und werden als miteinander verschlungen erzählt und gedacht. Dadurch bieten sie nicht nur einen alternativen (vielleicht gar: 'wirklichkeitsangemesseneren') Blick auf das Verhältnis von Stadt und Land in der (nicht nur literarischen) Moderne, sondernladen zugleich immer wieder aufs Neue zu Nach- und Neuvermessungen ein.

The introduction presents the topic of the anthology and shows Franz Kafka himself - in his work, in his life - as an advocate of the rural and the province(s). In view of the asymmetrical relationships between city and countryside in modernity, the texts intercede for the mostly ignored ambivalences and complexities of these very spaces by expressing both their heterogeneous appearances and their respective perspective dependencies and functionalizations. Kafka's literary-lifeworld provinces often form intertwined spaces in which the interpenetration of the urban and the rural becomes apparent. In contrast to the general tendency towards separation and specialization, pre-modernity and modernity, office and pub, farmers and civil servants meet here and are told and thought of as intertwined. In this way, they not only offer an alternative (perhaps even: more 'realistic') view of the relationship between town and country in (not only literary) modernity, but at the same time repeatedly invite us to re-examine and re-survey.
