Arthur Coleman Danto (1924-2013) patřil k nejvýznamnějším postavám analytické filozofie umění 20. století. Jeho texty o ontologii a historické podmíněnosti umění měly nesporný vliv na to, jak o soudobém umění uvažujeme. Tato studie se zaměřuje na Dantův přístup k definování umění. Neomezuje se však pouze na výklad jednotlivých charakteristik umění, ale klade si za cíl doložit, že Danto podstatu umění spojuje s tzv. zkušenostní dimenzí. Oproti tradičnímu čtení, které zdůrazňuje sémantický rozměr Dantovy definice, argumentuje, že Danto dlouhodobě zastával názor, že umělecká díla mají nejen obsah, ale také schopnost vyvolat na straně vnímatele emocionální reakci, potažmo proměnit jeho náhled na svět.

Arthur C. Danto was one of the most influential analytical philosophersof art of the 20th century. His thoughts on art ontology and the definingand historicity of art have significantly shaped the Anglo-American philosophicaldiscourse on art and aesthetics. This book focuses on Danto&apos;sapproach to defining art, specifically on the role of the experientialdimension in defining art. Since publishing his first monograph on artontology, The Transfiguration of the Commonplace, Danto has examined thetransformation or transfiguration of an ordinary object into an artwork.In his view, what differentiates an artwork from its perceptually indiscerniblecounterpart is content, that is, its semantical dimension. Danto&apos;sclaim that artworks are about something helped to establish the art of the20th and 21st centuries as art, readymade and Conceptual art included.The emphasis on the semantical dimension led Danto to stipulate twonecessary conditions for being art. In his book After the End of Art, heargues that art has to be about something and embody its meaning.Accordingly, Danto&apos;s art definition is supposed to be a semantical one.Contrary to this traditional view, this book aims to show that Danto&apos;sart definition not only involves but requires the experiential dimension.The experiential dimension embraces the spectator&apos;s interaction with anartwork. Danto supposed that art provokes an emotional response on thepart of the spectator, that is to say, that art can make us adopt a specificattitude towards something depicted in a particular artwork. In otherwords, an artist makes us see the content of an artwork in a certain light,and we, thus, - at least temporarily - accept the perspective of the artpiece in question. In Danto&apos;s view, this shift in perspective is not merelycognitive but also emotionally colored since spectators feel the emotionappropriate to the artwork&apos;s content (and embodiment).
